Macros

What are they and why are they important?

Macros are the main categories of nutrition: they consist of Protein, Carbohydrates and Fat. Each one of them is important for healthy function of our bodies.

Protein

·       Growth and maintenance of tissue including muscle

·       Enzymatic function

·       Transports and stores nutrients

·       Provides energy

Carbohydrates

·       Energy

·       Digestive health

·       Stored energy

·       Keeps blood sugar in a healthy range

Fat

·       Protection and insulation of vital organs

·       Insulation to help regulate body temperature

·       Energy

·       Absorption and transportation of certain vitamins

1 gram of protein is 4 calories, 1 gram of carbohydrates is 4 calories and, 1 gram of fat is 9 calories. As you can see it’s important to not ingest too much fat with a high calorie per gram value. However, ingestion of too many calories no matter which macro they’re from will result in weight gain.

All macros are important for having a healthy body. Make sure you are getting each of them in the right amount to properly fuel your body and achieve optimal health.
